Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim – Former President, Group CEO, Axiata Group

In collaboration with PASSIONS, VOICE OF ASIA is proud to present timeless articles from the archives, reproduced digitally for your reading pleasure. Originally published in PASSIONS Volume 44, we present this story on Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, then Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim, in his position as the President and Group CEO of Axiata Group.

As we celebrate our 54th year of independence, PASSIONS asks: have we freed our minds, our hearts, and our spirits, to continually evolve as a nation, and be part of a world that is gradually getting smaller, closer, and more competitive? PASSIONS invited Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim, the President and Group CEO of Axiata Group, to share his thoughts on this issue, and suggest a wish – as one may do while holding a magic wand – to bring about a positive and dramatic improvement in our society.

In Malaysia today, we have the ability to produce good students, but not necessarily good leaders. This is because our present education system is very left-brain oriented, which is focused on logical thinking processes.

However, we need to do more to produce good leaders for our country. To achieve this, we need to supplement our education system to inculcate the use of both the left and right parts of the brain. This will inspire critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, and most important of all – a right and positive attitude.

This will in turn create good leadership skills. And we need to start this approach from a person’s youth – ideally from between 12 to 13 years of age. That’s where our country’s future lies.
