GKN Engine Systems Component Repair Sdn Bhd (GKN Engine), GKN Aerospace’s Malaysian subsidiary operation in Johor, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Transport Innovator of the Year category at The Transport Expo Asia (TXA) Awards 2026, recognising its technology-driven transformation of aircraft engine component repair. The nomination highlights GKN Engine among organisations that demonstrates how innovation, advanced technology and operational excellence can contribute to the development of Asia’s transport industry.

From Aircraft Components to Aviation Capability

We need to embrace a ‘repair first, replace when necessary’ mindset when safety permits. Repair is often the smarter and more sustainable choice than replacement.
— Lim May Lai, Site Director, GKN Engine Systems Component Repair Sdn Bhd.

Based in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, GKN Engine specialises in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) of aircraft engine components, including metallic and composite fan blades, platforms and also fillers. Its operations combine specialised repair expertise with advanced technologies such as Electron Beam Welding (EBW), Computer Numerical Control machining, robotic blending, robotic thermal spraying, optical scanning and automated inspection processes. The facility also serves as GKN Aerospace’s Asia-Pacific regional centre for component MRO, strengthening Malaysia’s position within the global aerospace supply chain.

A key element of GKN Engine’s innovation is what the company identifies as Malaysia’s first Electron Beam Welding machine for engine repair. The micro-precision technology uses automated programmes to weld titanium components in a vacuum environment without wire filler, introducing a specialised repair capability to Malaysia.

Building a More Connected MRO Operation

The Electron Beam Welding (EBW) capability is part of a wider transformation in how GKN Engine conducts and manages repair work. Its own Johor facility has incorporated robotics, automated manufacturing processes, digital monitoring and data-driven performance management to create a more connected operating environment.

Real-time tools and digital dashboards straight away improves consistency, decision-making, and productivity. And if there are any repetitive manual activities, they eventually got removed by automation and robotic technologies. It demonstrates visibility of key performance and also allows the company to fulfil the rigid quality standards requirements in aircraft MRO.

In addition, measurable outcomes have been obtained from the transition, indicating a faster turnaround under Lim May Lai’s management. It helps the repaired components to return to customers sooner, directly supporting aircraft availability and help operators respond to their operational requirements. To be exact, the customer turnaround times were decreased from over 100 days to less than 30 days, while digital transformation initiatives improved the productivity from 60% to 90%.

GKN Engine’s transformation also demonstrates how advanced technology can be used for purposes other than producing new aircraft components. By extending the service life of repairable components, improving repair processes and using digital tools to manage operations, MRO itself becomes an area for transport innovation.

For GKN Engine, the next stage will involve further digitalisation, automation and advanced repair technologies, alongside collaboration with GKN Aerospace’s global technology network and local partners.

The TXA 2026 Transport Innovator of the Year nomination therefore reflects a broader transformation for GKN Engine subsidiary operation in Johor facility, from introducing specialised repair capabilities to develop a more digitally connected, efficient and technologically advanced aerospace MRO operation in Malaysia.
