TCSens’ AwAS

TCSens Sdn. Bhd. (TCSens) has been named a finalist in the Excellence in Road Safety Solutions category at The Transport Expo Asia Awards (TXA) 2026, recognising its role in maintaining and upgrading Malaysia’s Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS), the automated speed and red-light enforcement camera network operated by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). TCSens’ AwAS support includes maintenance, field support and next-generation cameras to sustain and enhance the technology behind automated traffic enforcement.

The nomination comes as road safety remains a key public concern in Malaysia. Effective enforcement must do more than detect offences; it must encourage safer driving behaviour. MIROS research provides evidence of AwAS’s impact.

Research by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) found that speed-limit compliance at AwAS locations increased from 52% before camera installation to 92% after six months and 96% after four years. Across six pilot locations, compliance improved at every site. The gains were particularly notable in Kajang, where compliance rose from 29.7% to 96.5%, and along the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), where it increased from 48.1% to 97.2%.

These findings highlight that enforcement success lies not only in detecting offences, but also in encouraging motorists to follow the rules.

Red-light violations also fell from 4.29% before camera installation to 1.23% after one year, a reduction of about 72%. However, the rate rose to 3.82% after four years, highlighting the challenge of sustaining safer behaviour and the need for enforcement systems to continue evolving.

Modernising Malaysia’s Road Safety Enforcement

TCSens maintains the AwAS camera network while introducing a new generation of enforcement technology, including the Ekin Spotter G2. The system provides 360-degree coverage, monitors traffic travelling in both directions and is designed to support enforcement of up to 17 traffic offences, expanding the scope of automated road monitoring in Malaysia.

The Ekin Spotter G2 has received approval from the National Metrology Institute of Malaysia for speed and red-light enforcement, reinforcing the importance of measurement accuracy and compliance with national standards in road safety enforcement.

Since September 2018, the AwAS network has recorded more than 4.8 million offence notices, reflecting the scale of automated traffic enforcement in Malaysia. Alongside enforcement activity, the system has also been associated with improvements in road safety outcomes. At the Menora Tunnel on the North-South Expressway, recorded accidents fell from 132 to 79, a reduction of approximately 40%. These figures, together with MIROS research showing sustained improvements in speed-limit compliance at AwAS locations, underscore the potential of automated enforcement technology to encourage safer driving behaviour and improve road safety.

By combining ongoing network maintenance with upgraded camera technology, TCSens’ AwAS work contributes to the continued development of Malaysia’s road safety infrastructure. Its work reflects the focus of the Excellence in Road Safety Solutions category at TXA Awards 2026, which recognises solutions that address real-world road safety challenges through technology and implementation.

Why the TXA Awards 2026 Finalist Recognition Matters

TCSens’ AwAS work reflects a combination of measurable behavioural outcomes, an established national enforcement programme, and continued investment in technology.

For road safety in Malaysia, the bigger question is whether such systems can help make safer driving a lasting habit, rather than a temporary response to the presence of a camera.

TCSens’ nomination as a TXA Awards 2026 finalist highlights the importance of practical, technology-driven solutions to road safety challenges. By supporting the maintenance of an established enforcement network while introducing upgraded camera systems, the company demonstrates how technical expertise and effective implementation can contribute to more consistent traffic enforcement in Malaysia.
