Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has been named a finalist for the Minister’s Laureate for National Transport Leadership at the Transports Expo Asia (TXA) Awards 2026,recognising its role in strengthening Malaysia’s aviation connectivity, economic contribution and international standing. MAG’s economic contribution is reflected not only in the scale of its operations, but also in how its network, partnerships and investments support Malaysia’s wider transport and economic priorities.
Aviation’s Contribution to the National Economy
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) directly employed over 14,000 people across its airlines, cargo operations, engineering, ground handling and other aviation-related businesses. Beyond passenger travel, MAB Kargo transported 262,062 tonnes of air cargo during the year, facilitating the movement of goods and supporting international trade. Together, these activities highlight MAG’s role in supporting employment, trade
and Malaysia’s wider economic development.
Connecting Malaysia to Global Markets
Building on its contribution to Malaysia’s economy, MAG plays an important role in connecting the country to regional and international markets. In 2025, the Group carried more than 18 million passengers, reflecting sustained travel demand and the continued importance of its network in connecting Malaysia to key markets.
Malaysia Airlines served more than 15 million passengers and operated flights to 66 destinations from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) Terminal 1, with access to over 1,000 destinations worldwide through the oneworld alliance and codeshare partners. Firefly, sister airline of Malaysia Airlines, strengthens domestic and regional connectivity, while Amal by Malaysia Airlines, MAG’s dedicated pilgrimage arm, carried approximately 400,000 Hajj and Umrah passengers in 2025. Together, these operations connect communities, support tourism and provide travellers with access to a broader range of international destinations.
MAG further extends its reach through strategic partnerships and codeshare arrangements that expand connectivity beyond its direct network. These collaborations support the Group’s ambition to strengthen KLIA’s role as a regional hub, connecting Malaysia with key international markets.
Investing in Malaysia’s Aviation Capabilities
MAG’s economic contribution is also reflected in its investment in local aviation capabilities. In September 2026, the Group signed an agreement to acquire Sepang Aircraft Engineering, subject to regulatory approval. The acquisition is expected to expand its aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services for airlines in ASEAN and beyond.
The Group also began groundworks in July 2026 on a new in-flight catering facility near KLIA, designed to produce around 50,000 meals daily, nearly double its current capacity. Scheduled to begin operations in 2029, the facility will serve MAG’s airlines and other carriers, supporting the growth of Malaysia’s aviation services sector.
A Stronger Malaysian Voice in Global Aviation
MAG’s influence also extends to international industry decision-making. In 2026, MAG’s President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, was confirmed as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s Board of Governors for a three-year term. Five MAG senior leaders were also appointed to key IATA industry committees, with three reappointed in recognition of their contributions. Their representation spans digital transformation, government affairs, finance, legal matters and sustainability, giving Malaysian aviation a stronger presence in discussions shaping the industry’s future.
Beyond airline operations, MAG’s economic contribution is demonstrated through its impact on Malaysia’s economy, its role in connecting
the country to global markets, and its efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s presence in the international aviation industry. These contributions underpin MAG’s recognition as a finalist in the TXA Awards 2026.
