Marillyn Hewson: Aiming For The Skies

Delve deep into the remarkable journey and enduring legacy of Marillyn Hewson, and learn how she has carved out her distinguished career in the aerospace and defence industry.

Leaping from the pages of Passions Vol. 56, this article has now been adapted for the digital age, here on for VOICE OF ASIA.

Defence might not seem to be an industry where one will find a woman in an executive position, let alone as the chief decision maker, but for Marillyn Hewson, it is her second home. A 30-year veteran at Lockheed Martin – the world’s largest aerospace and defence company– Hewson became the first woman to head the company in its 100-years of existence in 2012. It has not been easy times for defence contractors in the United States, especially with Budget cuts making a dent in the US Department of Defense spending. However, not only has Hewson managed to pilot Lockheed Martin through the storm, she has also bettered its performance, with profits for 2013 rising by 8.6% despite a drop in earnings. Cognisant of the fact that US defence spending will continue to be reduced, Hewson eventually led the company to focus on international markets.
