The Oscar snub for Barbie – what does it mean for the industry?

When Barbie was released last year, no one could envisage the success that awaited the film in the following months. Helmed by Greta Gerwig with Margot Robbie producing and starring as the lead, the film became a pop culture hit upon release.

As we have seen with award shows recently (Moonlight’s surprise win, “The Slap” on Chris Rock by Will Smith”), controversy never seems to be far away. This year’s Oscars is no different. Barbie’s female director, Greta Gerwig and lead in the film, Margot Robbie were both left empty-handed while Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Cue the furore everywhere. But is it really that big of a deal?

After all, maybe it’s not an example of patriarchy, maybe it’s not an outrage on feminism. Maybe it’s just because….Ryan Gosling deserved it?

As frustrating as it may be for a film focused on the female experience, Ryan thrived in his role and ultimately stole the show. Let’s not forget either that Barbie has been nominated for a total of seven Oscars, including two nominations for best original song as well as costume and production design. America Ferrera was even nominated for best supporting actress – which in all things considered, was very generous considering the fellow nominees in the same category.

Maybe it’s fine that a woman wasn’t the standout role in Barbie. The message of Barbie was that a better world is only found when men and women support each other –  so can’t we just let Ken have his moment?
