Malaysia Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (MRL) has been nominated for The Transport Expo Asia Awards (TXA) 2026 in the Sustainable Transport Initiative category. Incorporated in 2016 and wholly owned by the Minister of Finance (Incorporated), MRL owns and oversees the construction of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), representing one of the most transformative infrastructure and leadership achievements in Malaysia’s transport history.

A Low-Carbon Transport Corridor: Transforming Mobility and Freight

At its core, MRL’s nomination for the Sustainable Transport Initiative of the Year highlights the ECRL as an electrified transport corridor designed to shift passenger travel and freight off carbon-intensive roadways. Led by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak and chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, MRL has engineered a railway system that burns zero fuel on board and utilizes energy-efficient regenerative braking to feed electricity back into the grid.

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) calculate that as cars, buses, and lorries are replaced by electric trains, the project will avoid approximately 334,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually at 2025 levels, scaling up to roughly 821,000 tonnes a year by 2035 and 1.13 million tonnes annually by 2045. Furthermore, Phase 1 of the project achieved 98% completion in September 2026 and is on track for commercial launch in mid-December 2026.

Integrating Renewable Energy and Smart Power Solutions

MRL is aggresively greening its energy matrix through comprehensive three-phase solar programme managed via its dedicated subsidiary, MRL Energy Sdn Bhd, aiming for at least a 30%  renewable energy mix for ECRL operations by 2030. By phase 1, carport solar installation across 16 stations (approx. 7.4 MWp), beginning with four main stations and a solar-battery storage pilot at KotaSAS in Kuantan launching in December 2026. In phase 2 and 3, MRL plan in expanding to ground-mounted solar with storage at traction power sites and rooftop solar across ancillary buildings, representing over RM230 million in private green investment.

This is projected to generate two terawwat-hours of clean electricity over 30 years, an initiative that will eliminate an additional 1.48 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Moreover, the railway’s infrastructure is built to withstand extreme weather, designed above 100-year flood levels with allowances for a 20% increase in rainfall intensity.

Low-Impact Design and Material Innovation

Sustainability at MRL is woven into every phase of construction and design. Through meticulous realignment, the project reduced required forest reserve clearance by approximately 90%, slashing the footprint from over 2,000 hectares down to roughly 216 hectares across 12 reserves.

Resource efficiency is further amplified through the use of industrial by-products like fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace (GGBS) to replace cement clinker, alongside on-site processing of excavated tunnel rock into backfill and aggregate. These sustainable practices helped the project earn a five-star sustainable INFRASTAR rating from CREAM with full marks for energy performance, complemented by 17 major awards and accreditations, including ISO 14001:2015 certification.

Malaysia Rail Link’s nomination for the Sustainable Transport Initiative of the Year reflects an exemplary model of climate-conscious infrastructure. By combining an electrified rail network, a clear pathway to 30% renewable energy operations, and rigorous low-impact construction methods, MRL continues to set the benchmark for sustainable transport development across Asia.
