Sabah Empowering Her People: Sabah Forest Industries (SFI), The Phoenix Rises From Its Ashes

Sabah Forest Industries (SFI). What Really Happened???

SFI went into receivership in 2017. At that point it had a production capacity of 240,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) for pulp and 144,000 TPA for paper, while its timber complex had a production capacity of 2,000 cubic metres of sawn timber and 4,000 cubic metres of plywood per month. It also had access to about 50,000 hectares of land planted with eucalyptus and acacia trees, a dedicated jetty with two berths for vessels with a maximum capacity of 15,000 deadweight tonnage.

In 2022, the state government gave a new lease of life to the struggling entity under Sabah Foundation (Yayasan Sabah Group). This was to salvage dying trees and give jobs and livelihoods back to the multitudes of SFI staff who were not paid salaries for months.

Here’s the real story.
