SUPPORTING THE MANUFACTURING PILLARS OF PENANG
From the time the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone (now Free Industrial Zone) started in 1972, Penang has established itself as a manufacturing hub – not only in Malaysia but in the wider Southeast Asia region. Today, Penang is home to a number of top-notch manufacturing facilities which require significant engineering services in order to ensure the smooth continuation of operations, and this is a task that has been aptly fulfilled by LWE Engineering.
Established in 1982 as Lian Wah Refrigeration & Electrical, LWE Engineering started out by providing air-conditioning and electrical design and installation services for cold rooms and other commercial clients. Over the years, the company expanded its portfolio to encompass electrical and mechanical engineering as well cleanroom services.
Presently, the company is a registered Class A electrical contractor under Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST – the Energy Commission of Malaysia), a Class G7 contractor under the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB), and a Class G7 contractor and supplier under Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). These are the highest levels of certifications, thus reflecting LWE Engineering’s expertise and experience.
In addition, LWE Engineering is also certified with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems for Design and Build Electrical and Mechanical Works and Cleanroom Architectural Systems by the Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) and the United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS).
These accreditations and certifications have further enhanced LWE Engineering’s reputation, so much so that it has become a trusted service provider for some of the top manufacturers and Multi National Companies (MNC) in Malaysia.
Impact on Penang
Having started out in the Klang Valley, LWE Engineering made its first foray into Penang in 1992 when electrical and electronics (E&E) company Applied Magnetics contracted it to provide electrical engineering and cleanroom services. This started the ball rolling and since then LWE Engineering has been a mainstay in Penang with an office in Seberang Prai on the mainland.
In fact, the list of clients in Penang that have engaged LWE Engineering reads like a who’s who of multinational and local companies, including global leaders in the E&E, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, semiconductor and optical media industries.
As Penang continues to move up the value chain as a hub for E&E and medical technology manufacturing, the support and services that LWE Engineering provides will be more critical and crucial than ever. And in doing so, it is playing a role in helping the State achieve its Penang 2030 master plan aspirations.
