As ASEAN advances towards becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies, cybersecurity has emerged as a strategic imperative. The rapid expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital finance and cross-border digital services is reshaping industries and accelerating economic growth, while exposing organisations to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
For ASEAN, the challenge is no longer merely technological. It is increasingly one of resilience, sovereignty and competitiveness. The ability to secure critical infrastructure, protect digital assets and build trusted cybersecurity capabilities has become fundamental to sustaining economic growth and maintaining confidence in the region’s digital future.
In the digital economy, trust may ultimately become ASEAN’s most valuable currency.
Against this backdrop, a new generation of regional cybersecurity companies is emerging. Among them is Nexagate, a Malaysian cybersecurity company whose evolution reflects a broader shift across Southeast Asia: the growing ability to develop globally competitive technology capabilities from within the region itself.

The Rise of Regional Cybersecurity Capability
Established in 2010, Nexagate began as a cybersecurity consultancy specialising in risk and compliance before progressively expanding into offensive security and managed security services. Over time, the company evolved into a pure-play cybersecurity provider offering what it terms Complete Cybersecurity, an integrated approach encompassing Risk & Compliance, Offensive Security and Managed Security capabilities.
This evolution mirrors the maturation of ASEAN’s digital economy itself, requiring providers that understand not only technology, but also local regulations, business environments and operating realities.
Nexagate’s ambition has therefore evolved beyond becoming Malaysia’s trusted cybersecurity partner. Today, the company aspires to build a globally competitive cybersecurity organisation headquartered in Southeast Asia and capable of serving organisations throughout the region and beyond.
Its growth has been marked by a sequence of deliberate milestones. ISO/IEC 27001 certification in 2012 established early credibility within Malaysia’s most regulated industries: banking, government and critical infrastructure. In July 2020, Nexagate became the 200th CREST accredited member worldwide, benchmarking its offensive security and security operations capabilities against a global standard.
The establishment of PT Nexagate in Jakarta in 2024 marked the company’s boldest cross-border step yet, extending its Complete Cybersecurity model into Southeast Asia’s largest and fastest-growing digital economy. More recently, in 2025, Nexagate became one of the earliest adopters of ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification in Malaysia, positioning the company at the forefront of responsible artificial intelligence governance in the region.
Collectively, these milestones signal the emergence of ASEAN-based cybersecurity capabilities that can compete internationally while remaining deeply rooted in the region they serve.
Cybersecurity Sovereignty and the ASEAN Opportunity
As geopolitical risks, data sovereignty concerns and supply chain vulnerabilities become increasingly prominent, cybersecurity self-sufficiency for ASEAN is no longer simply a technology issue. It is not about pride, it is about strategic sovereignty.
Organisations today require cybersecurity partners that understand local regulations, operating environments and the evolving digital landscape across ASEAN. Regional providers possess a distinct advantage: they operate within the same environments as their clients, offering contextual intelligence that solutions architectured elsewhere cannot fully replicate. When threats exploit local ecosystems, the response must be immediate, locally anchored and regulatorily aware, a capability that cannot be imported on short notice.
Dependence on external technologies exposes organisations to supply chain vulnerabilities, service disruptions and pricing pressures driven by currency fluctuations and geopolitical dynamics. ASEAN’s young, digitally native workforce holds enormous potential, but without deliberate investment in homegrown expertise, that talent remains underdeveloped or migrates elsewhere. Cybersecurity is also a growth enabler in its own right: organisations that cannot demonstrate a strong security posture risk being locked out of cross-border trade and digital partnerships.
The development of regional cybersecurity champions is therefore not only an industry objective, but an economic and strategic imperative for ASEAN.
Building a Regional Cybersecurity Hub
The establishment of Nexagate’s Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) in Kuala Lumpur in 2024 represents one of the company’s most significant strategic investments.
The GSOC serves as the operational convergence point for Nexagate’s Complete Cybersecurity capabilities, integrating risk and compliance, offensive security and managed security services under a unified operating environment powered by the company’s proprietary Nexa Security Intel (NSI) platform.
At the centre of Nexagate’s regional operating model, NSI enables integrated intelligence, real-time threat visibility and coordinated security operations across multiple markets, supporting the company’s vision of delivering cybersecurity capabilities built in ASEAN for ASEAN.
Malaysia provides a strong foundation for such ambitions. A growing cybersecurity talent pipeline, supported by universities, government agencies and industry collaborations, has positioned the country as an increasingly credible regional cybersecurity hub.
Today, the GSOC supports organisations across financial services, government, telecommunications, digital enterprises and other critical sectors. Operating alongside Nexagate’s Jakarta operations, it enables intelligence sharing, coordinated security operations and cross-border collaboration that are increasingly essential in today’s interconnected threat environment.
The GSOC also supports organisations responding to Malaysia’s Cybersecurity Act 2024 (Act 854), reinforcing Nexagate’s role in strengthening national cyber resilience and supporting the protection of National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII).
More importantly, the GSOC demonstrates that world-class cybersecurity infrastructure can be developed, operated and scaled from within ASEAN itself.

Regional Expansion as a Strategic Imperative
Indonesia represented Nexagate’s first major regional expansion market. As Southeast Asia’s largest economy and one of its fastest-growing digital markets, Indonesia presents substantial opportunities driven by rapid digitalisation, increasing regulatory requirements and rising demand for cybersecurity expertise.
The establishment of PT Nexagate in 2024 marked an important step in the company’s regional strategy. Within a relatively short period, the company secured clients across sectors including airport services, manufacturing, oil and gas, digital services and financial services, validating both market demand and the transferability of its operating model.
Together with its operations in Brunei, these experiences demonstrate that an ASEAN cybersecurity ecosystem is increasingly achievable through shared intelligence, integrated operations and regional collaboration.
What is emerging is not merely a regional expansion story, but the foundation of an interconnected ASEAN cybersecurity ecosystem, one that enables stronger resilience and trusted digital collaboration across borders.
The Next Frontier: AI-Powered Cybersecurity
The future of cybersecurity will increasingly be shaped by artificial intelligence.
AI-driven attacks are compressing timelines to milliseconds, removing the human reaction window traditional defences relied on. Traditional security approaches that rely heavily on human intervention may no longer be sufficient as organisations face increasingly sophisticated and automated threats.
Recognising this shift, Nexagate has invested in NSIxAI, a cybersecurity platform incorporating CySecLLM, Agentic AI capabilities and AI-driven security intelligence. The company views artificial intelligence not simply as another technology trend, but as a transformational force that will redefine cyber defence and digital resilience.
As organisations accelerate AI adoption, the challenge increasingly becomes not only securing digital infrastructure but also governing and protecting AI systems themselves. Nexagate holds itself to the same standard it advocates for its clients: its own achievement as one of the earliest adopters of ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification in Malaysia reflects a walk the talk approach to AI governance, applying the same discipline to its own AI systems that it expects organisations to apply to theirs.
In this context, organisations capable of securing AI may become just as important as those developing it.
Strategic Capital as a Growth Enabler
Technology companies rarely scale through capital alone. Institutional support, governance capabilities and strategic partnerships often prove equally important.
VentureTECH, a Malaysian government-linked impact investment company focused on accelerating the growth of high-potential companies in high-growth and high-value industries, invested in Nexagate in December 2023. The investment directly unlocked three strategic initiatives that would have taken significantly longer to materialise without it.
The GSOC was the most capital intensive: it is the engine behind Managed Security, which accounts for more than 60 to 70% of company revenue, and without that capital Nexagate risked losing ground in a maturing SOCaaS market. Establishing PT Nexagate in Indonesia equally required committed capital for local talent and setup, with the team growing from two to 20 in under two years. The third pillar was NSIxAI, since AI-driven research and development is capital intensive and standing still was not an option.
Equally important was the institutional validation that came with it. In a trust-driven industry such as cybersecurity, the question is never just “can they do it?” but “should we trust them?”.
Beyond capital, VentureTECH’s backing provided institutional validation, strengthening confidence among clients, partners and government stakeholders while supporting Nexagate’s ambition to become an ASEAN cybersecurity champion.
Scaling Regional Impact
Nexagate’s growth trajectory reflects the increasing demand for trusted cybersecurity capabilities across ASEAN.
Today, Nexagate serves clients across seven countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and South Africa, with operating offices in Malaysia and Indonesia. Its client portfolio spans financial institutions, government agencies, telecommunications providers, digital enterprises and other critical sectors.
Its managed security business continues to experience strong growth, with Security Operation Centre as-a-service (SOCaaS) customers doubling from 10 to 20. In Indonesia, PT Nexagate recorded 33-fold growth within its first 18 months of operation, expanding its team from two to 20 professionals while securing 15 clients across multiple sectors.
The company’s workforce has also expanded to approximately 100 professionals across Malaysia and Indonesia, with cybersecurity specialists comprising the majority of its talent base. Through initiatives such as Nexa Academy, Nexagate continues to contribute to the development of cybersecurity talent across the region.
Since 2010, Nexagate has supported and protected more than 500 organisations across seven countries, demonstrating that cybersecurity capabilities built in ASEAN can compete successfully on both regional and global stages. Its continued expansion illustrates how homegrown technology firms can evolve from national champions into regional players while contributing to ASEAN’s digital resilience.

Looking Ahead
ASEAN’s digital economy continues to expand at remarkable speed, alongside a threat surface expanding just as fast, from tightening regulation to a widening talent shortage to the demands of AI governance.
For Nexagate, the next five years carry a clear aspiration: to be one of the leading pure-play cybersecurity service providers in ASEAN, pursued through expanding its Complete Cybersecurity offering, scaling NSIxAI as a technology-led growth engine, and deepening talent development through Nexa Academy.
More broadly, the company’s evolution reflects a larger opportunity for ASEAN itself: proof that the region possesses not only the talent and ambition to compete globally, but the capability to shape the future of digital trust and responsible AI adoption within ASEAN and beyond.
